Staffer is a series of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for the creation of staff assignments, tracking of assignments, overhead and G&A against budgeted amounts and creation of staffing projections. The program consisted of thousands of lines of Visual Basic for Applications to download the personnel data from the mainframe, import the staffing data from other databases, apply scheduling algorithms to account for divisional and company overhead, and calculate G&A rates. Staffer was originally conceived as a backup accounting system, but ultimately helped the corporate accounting department discover and repair errors in their mainframe accounting systems. The system was written in Excel to take advantage of Excel's excellent reporting tools and familiarity to the accounting staff.
